‘Writing: getting started’ introduces the essentials of planning an essay, structuring an essay, writing introductions and writing conclusions. It commences with the vital importance of understanding questions, explaining a wide variety of terms used in questions and specific verbs deployed. When students develop their own essays defining a thesis statement repays careful consideration; the chapter explains how they can be usefully clarified and narrowed down. Six types of essays are outlined from (in order of complexity) from definition essays to evaluation essays. Tips for opening and middle passages in essays or theses are given and the handling of paragraphs and a model example of critical writing are treated. The author concludes with ‘conclusions’ and how to prepare these, with tips on how students can find their own academic voice and why audio/visual assessments don’t necessarily change the rules of the game in presenting arguments.
